How much are cell phones or smartphones part of your bug out gear? Do you have a smartphone with a few different apps, or maybe an iPad or Kindle with some PDF's of information or some maps? Maybe you have a small laptop to hold copies of all your ID and things.

How do you keep them charged? Do you have a generator in your garage? Maybe a portable charger that stores power to charge everything. Maybe you plan on using solar or mechanical energy to keep everything running. Have any tips for someone looking at PDF's, protective phone cases, or charging methods?

I posted a link in the library section to some PDF files.
The only electronics I keep for emergencies is a hand crank radio.

I've been wanting to get a small solar charger for awhile now. Eton makes a hand crank radio with a built in solar panel for phones and stuff that's supposed to work pretty well.

Maybe Santa will be good to me this year :-)

Let me know if the solar panel works out. I had an Eton one as well (I think anyhow) and it had a few of the popular cellphone adapters attached too it so that you could charge it while winding the crank. It wasn't all that effective, but with technology becoming increasingly better it will have improved, I'm sure.

My current solar power set up. The small black rectangle is an external powerbank. I had to make a trip down to Cherry point last weekend, brought that with me, charged my phone fully twice. The power bank can be plugged into the solar panel via a micro usb cord while the panel is flexible and can be strapped to your pack while you walk.

That is very cool KN!
Mind me asking how much you paid for that and where you got it?
It's exactly what I'm looking for...
There is so much info and good stuff on my smartphone, it would be nice to be able to access it if the power goes out.

I found them at the px here on Camp Lejeune. The whole package was $80, but we get a lot of stuff much cheaper on base. Might be a bit more for you, but check Amazon. I also found an app on my kindle which lets me download and view maps while not online. I'm gonna finish downloading basically the whole Eastern Sea board and let y'all know how it works out.
