Helicopters !

Vertical take-off. No runway necessary.
Once more into the fray,
Into the last good fight I'll ever know,
Live and die on this day,
Live and die on this day.

Practical indeed but too much maintenance?

Way too much maintenance and they use more fuel than fixed wing.

If the zombie apocalypse happens, I'll take whatever is available. I think in an emergency, such as ZPAW, a helicopter would be more convenient if you needed to take off quickly and with limited space. The fuel and maintenance problems would be a moot point at that time.

A helicopter is a connection between the original Dawn Of The Dead and Day Of The Dead.

In the first film, it's used as an escape transport in the beginning, then kept for the same purpose later.

In the second film, it's used on missions, then as an escape transport.

I always feel going up to get away is quicker/safer, than trying to make it through zombie infested streets.

It wouldn't be moot if, due to lack of maintenance, the thing decided to quit flying while over a horde.

I have dreamed of being able to fly a helicopter since the original Dawn of the Dead.
Simply because it does not require a landing strip.
If you had a large compound you could keep a few of them there.
Surely one of the would work.

I always thought fly boy got a bum rap in the movie though.
He was portrayed as overly sensitive.
I always felt he should have been a vet who could "hang".

Helicopters are quite versatile. But the problem is that they require a hell of a lot more maintenance and specialized equipment than fixed wing. They are also more sensitive to the environment unless one was a very experienced pilot. Ever seen a engine quit while the bird was still in ground effect? The thing simply drops like a brick. No auto-rotation, no gliding. The bird just quits flying.
