Willys Jeep And M4 Tractor

Postby LoneWolf » Mon Jun 30, 2014 7:35 am

Although maybe not suitable for a ZA, on my search for books on civilian tractors/off-road vehicles, I saw two military manuals for these two in particular, which I am hoping to purchase soon (books not vehicles)

Anybody own/used/had dealings with either of them ?

Never had a Willeys but back in the early '90's my buddy and I went in together on a 1967 USPS Jeep.
That thing was pretty bitchin!
Right-hand steering wheel, no roof or doors, (his folks made us install a roll bar before they'd let us drive it).
It was only 2WD, but it was so light it would go just about anywhere.
I think, after all was said and done, (roll bar, new/used off-road tires, replaced all the wiring, etc...), it cost us about $1000.
Loved that thing!

They caught my attention straight away, though I was aware of the Willys jeep and seen a couple being restored on tv programmes, I didn't know about the M4 tractor. I felt they might be good as a set of vehicles for a ZA survivalist, having the agility of the jeep and the tough workhorse-type ability of the tractor. I'm def going to get their manuals and study them.

In '04 (a year after I bought my Jeep) they came out with a Willy version direct from the factory, complete with the narrow rock hard tires and OD green paint scheme.

Nice images Red. Thanks for that ! ;)

It is the tractor that appeals to me as it is like a tank without the turret :?

Anyway, watched several tv programmes on military combat restoration, but never seen the M4.

Always liked the WW2 halftrack, knowing there are 2 new nicely illustrated volumes available about them, but the M4 is my main interest.

It's got a nice M2 Browning mounted up top though.
A tank killer (like the M5 Stuart) would be pretty slick to have if you could feed it fuel and ammo. You'd need some serious firepower to take it out and they're damn fast too.

I don't think that cannon would still be attached to that Jeep after that jump.

When I was a little kid a guy in our neighborhood used to buy and restore those little mail trucks.

Yeah, the M4 tractor, based on the Stuart chassis, is a real peach! The British called the Stuart the Honey due to all of its cool features. Great engines, practically never threw a track in the desert(big problem with Brit tracked vehicles), among other things. I love them something fierce!

Cananda makes a bitching 8x8 ATV. The South African Para troopers use it. Thing can hit 45kmph, carry 950kg and tow 1000kgs and at 230kgs or with pontoons it fully amphmboises (I think the civlian one is better in the water to since the Army modfied them and uped the weight. They really bitching. I know jermy clarkson from top gear owns one.
