Kinda reviving an old article here but after my first time doing a ride in hills I remembered something...

You need to have really strong legs to go any significant distance on a bike. I did a twenty mile ride in the hills just west of Portland yesterday and I sure as hell felt it.

One benefit of the bike is that they're damn near silent and a good one is light. I have a rack and bags on mine so I can carry stuff. Plus once I get it back to NC I'm gonna start making modifications to it so it rides smoother under load.

20 miles is a long way.
You have to be in good shape to ride that far...

My fifty year old father just did a 107 mile bike race, that's a long distance to ride.

Farthest I've ever ridden was about 50-60 miles in one day, but it was on the flat ground in Eastern NC, not the Coastal Mountain range in western Oregon.

The longest bike ride for me was around the outside perimeter of Mackinac Island in Michigan. It is about 7 miles with a mix of flat land and hills. Typically the ride also included some trail riding through the interior which is much hillier. Personally, I walked my bike up a lot of those hills. I really do not enjoy riding a bike--I'd rather walk or ride a horse.

I am up to walking 2 miles now.
Cant do it every day but I can manage it.
Not bad for someone who could not walk 100 yards less than a year ago.

UD--I'll leave running to you youngsters. I'm no longer built for speed.

Bob--keep up the good work! I knew you were having some health issues, but I didn't realize you were having problems walking. Is it your back?
