My Recent New Titles - Reviews ?

Postby LoneWolf » Wed Jun 25, 2014 6:15 am

You may remember I purchased several new books on bugging out bags/vehicles, sniping, surveillance, tractors, weapon mounts for secondary armament, etc.

When each is read, should I give a review here ?

Not a review per se, but got hold of two volumes covering WW2 US uniforms, weapons, equipment.

Tell me, how come you fellows always get the best gear ?

Personally, I always liked the Colt .45 auto used in unison with the olive green webbing pistol belt and leather flap holster, which I saw used a couple of times with the holster on the left side, butt forward. Looked great.

I'd love to get an old, leather flap holster for my Hi-Power. I just think they look so cool.
Kind of low on the priority list right now though.
Haven't spent a ton of time looking for one but you'd think there would be tens of thousands of them out there. I mean it was like the most common issued military sidearm around the world for decades, right?

I like the shoulder holsters they had back then. There were several US versions and they still use them today with tank and AFV crews. Here is a replica type of recent manufacture:

MrKnot, a lot of those old holsters simply rotted over the years. Bad storage and crappy fighting conditions killed leather. Remember now, the latest issue WWII stuff is almost 70 years old! Collectors like originals so the good stuff has been grabbed up for the most part. You can still get nice replica ones that are just as good out there. On a final note, the only Hi-Powers I've seen in WWII pics were in shoulder holsters for the most part. Other than that, maybe in those British canvas ones on their belts.

Red - nice image. Yes, I liked thar type too, but thought they were only for the Colt Commander autos (?)

When I was studying the Zulu War 1879, I was surprised to see the wide usage of a type of shoulder holster by the British and Colonials, but consisting of only a single leather strap diagonally across the body, right shoulder to left waist for right hand draw.

Nope, they fit the standard 1911s, tankers and such used them all the time to get in and out easier. As for those British ones, sure the holsters weren't just on a high waist belt supported by the shoulder strap? Germans used to do the same thing as well as Japanese and a multitude of others. Those US shoulder holsters are still used for the Berettas that they use, I think they are black.
