I was shown a bottle of a brand named "Two Stars" at Total Wine they claimed it was made by the Sazerac people.
I looked it up and sure enough it is distilled by the Buffalo Trace Distillery.
I can't find much on it, the distillery web site does not mention it.
At $17 for a 750 the price is not bad at all.
BUT, which mash bill is it?
I really like their Mash Bill #2 if it turned out to be that one I would buy it for sure.

Mash Bill #2 is the one that is used for Blantons, the various versions of Ancient Age and several others.
It is the high Rye mash bill.

MacAbre was talking about doing some tastings with things other than whiskeys.
Perhaps some of the higher end Tequilas or Rums.

Went grocery shopping tonight so I cruised down the liquor aisle (as always) to check prices and look for new additions. They took Bulliet products of sale so now it's $28/bottle instead of $21. Bummer, that was the best deal around.
There were all types of vodka I'd never seen before including the flavored stuff that's so popular these days, even a grapefruit infused one. I'll get to it someday, grapefruit juice is my favorite.
The big score I found was Firefly Moonshine, in a glass jar no less. $23 as a promotional price was nice, down from the $29 normal price point. Four varieties including standard, peach, apple pie, and one more that I just can't recall. I think it was some sort of berry flavor. I went with standard so I could give it a decent comparison, I'll crack it open soon and make a honest report.

I think it would have been Cherries in the jar.
Let us know what you think I have considered trying it a couple of times.

I noticed the other day that Bulleit Rye is now available in 1.75 bottles.

I haven't seen Bulleit in 1.75L anywhere around here yet, not even at BevMo. Probably something they'll have to order for me.

Firefly Moonshine White Lightning
100.7 Proof
Opened at room temp, no ice cubes
Upon cracking the top, the aroma actually reminds me of vodka, not moonshine. Even the initial taste is somewhat vodka like, strong vodka that is. A nice burn on the throat at first but it's over quite quickly. Tha aftertaste reminds me of Gentleman Jack or Jim Beam. Definitely not a replacement for fine bourbon or rye in my opinion, but it is quite strong and hits you right away. No creeping up on you with this stuff. This is one of those rare cases where I'd probably recommend buying the flavored varieties, maybe even mixed with white grape juice or lemonade. Should go well just sitting on the porch or in a park on a warm day. Slow and low is the tempo. They have quite a selection of flavors, but some only come in 60-80 proof.
I suppose I'm a Bulleit Rye man through and through.

NOTE: Difficult to pour from the jar to a glass

Came across an interesting recipe.....

MGP = LDI = Seagram's = 95% Rye 5% malted Barley = Damn Tasty Rye

Bulleit, Dickel and several others are MGP ryes.
I found one newly available locally that is better than either.

Bulleit is slightly more flavorful and robust than Dickel even though both are 90 proof.
I found a source for Smooth Ambler distillery Old Scout Rye.
It is a MGP rye aged 7 years at 99 proof.
It Rocks!
It is noticeably darker with more alcohol and flavor than Bulleit which is generally considered to include 4 to 7 year old.
The extra years in the barrel mellow it nicely.
When I took my first sip at 80 degrees I thought nice.
When I cooled it to 32 degrees and swished it around my mouth I thought WoW!
It about melted my nose with the Rye spice.

UD you should really try this one.
Old Scout Rye by Smooth Ambler
$35.99 per 750
99 proof
7 years old.
I just wish it was less expensive...

Next time I'm out and about I'll be a lookin for it. I still have a bottle of Makers And 3 bottles of Bulleit in the cabinet.
I also found a bottle of Chambord hidden in the back row, still unopened.

Is it good on ice cream?
