Decommissioned Warship ?

Postby LoneWolf » Mon Jan 27, 2014 8:26 am

Watched a few episodes of Monster Moves, and came up with the idea of transporting a decommissioned warship to your bug out location, to use as your stronghold, basically an in country dry dock !

Not a bad idea, but it wouldn't work for those who are landlocked.

The warship could be situated on land, secured in a ready-made trench, deep enough and lined to hold the keel secure, the rest of the hull acting as high walls, the various rooms/cabins used for the survivors, spaces elsewhere for supplies.

It'd be of better construction than shipping containers.

The bridge, etc., being good for lookouts, sniper positions and for mounting larger machine-guns.

Though a huge undertaking, the ship could be dismantled in sections and transported via monster moves vehicles, to be rebuilt at the location.

If you had that kind of time and resources at you disposal, you'd be better off just building a castle.

I do love the idea of using an old ship, anchored in a safe harbor, as a fortress though...

Someone with a ton of money could and near unlimited resources could probably pull it off.

Doesn't even have to be a huge ship either, there are a lot of big rivers out there...

Imagine end-of-world scenario, and you've managed to get out of towns/cities, then after struggling through woodland/forests, or over/round a hill, you see a battleship set in the ground, in a field and people 'on board' with guns trained on you !

Surreal ?.....Hell yes !!!

Exactly. It'd be a great defence against zeds, but also, daunting to other survivors/scavengers/raiders, as the scale of the stronghold and work involved in creating it on land, would make them wonder just how many occupants were inside that they couldn't see from the ground. I reckon they'd by-pass it, thinking they'd likely be outnumbered and probably outgunned, as only proper preppers would have thought of it, and would be ready for anything !

with out power it will get either very hot or very cold, and even if a boat is just sitting in the harbor it need a trained crew. A flood or fire along side is just has common at sea and just has deadly.

Not knocking the idea just showing there are issues you will need to cover. you need power for the ventilation and lights witch means you need a generator and fuel, you need a good crew with at least 1 who can do maintenance on the Genset. A ships genset is not you back yard affair, even our small one is bigger than a car engine, a frigat or larger could have a genset bigger than a car.
