.44 magnum ammo question.

If It Goes Bang It Goes Here

.44 magnum ammo question.

Postby zackattack » Tue Dec 16, 2014 8:16 am

So I was on Cheaper than Dirt looking at their .44 magnum ammo prices and in their list they had .44 Remington Magnum and .44 Special. Is their much of a difference in these two? Can they both be shot out of a .44 magnum revolver? or do you need to have a specific model? I have just known .44 magnum not .44 special so I was just wondering.

I feel kinda dumb asking this question but if anybody can answer this I would appreciate it very much. I am planning on getting a butt load of .44 ammo when my tax return comes in the next couple months.

If I am not mistaken...

.44 Special is the same size but of lesser power as the .44 Magnum round, much like .38 Special is with .357 Magnum. Therefore they should be fine to use in your revolvers. However, they will have lesser range and accuracy than the higher loadings. Still a good thing so as to easier feed said revolvers!

One of the official firearms operators should be chiming in with confirmation on this shortly, please stand by!

44 Mag casings are 1/10 of an inch longer than 44 Spec. The shorter casings can be safely fired in any 44 mag chambered firearm unless specifically noted by the manufacturer of said firearm.
Firing standard 44 Spec in a 44 Mag chambered weapon is like shooting a cap gun. Near zero recoil.....

You will find 44 special much more pleasant to shoot.
As was previously said a good comparison is 38 special to 357 mag.
Most people enjoy shooting them.

Good to be able to feed them with both types for their size, I always liked that idea.

In these parts 44 Special ammo costs more and they're not that easy to find.

Much more uncommon here.
I almost bought a used Charter Arms Bulldog once upon a time though.

As far as reloading goes, can .44 Magnum casings be shortened to .44 Special size if they get worn at the edges? You could possibly make your own in a pinch right? Either way, reloading helps with ammo availability problems.

I've hand trimmed magnum cases down to size, but my hands hurt for a week after.
